Hi Mike;
I am responding not to this message, but I have another query. I am having problems connecting my United States Atherton's to the one's in England. My grandfather had done some crude family history some time ago, before computers. I will list ancestery chart starting with me:

All above were born in the United States. Here is what I have for the England born Atherton's:
James Atherton, Sr. & Hannah (James and Humphrey came to the United States together; researchers are not sure if they are brothers or uncle and nephew)
Edmund Atherton & Mary Rudd
Humphrey Atherton & Alice ?
I am not sure of the ancestery beyond Humphrey. Here is what my granfather had typed:
"From Atherton, a chapelry in the parish of Leigh, Lancashire, England, comes the surname Atherton, which thus takes it's place among the many surnames of local origin. The Atherton family of Lancashire, is one of ancient lineage and honorable history in the county. It was possessed of large holdings of land, which it increased by inter-marriage with other wealthy families until the Atherton's became one of the most prosperous families among the commons of England, Ten miles northwest of Manchester, England, is the town of Atherton, where the family was originally located. Robert de Atherton lived at the time of King John, 1199-1216. He was high sherriff of the county and held the manor of Atherton from the Barons of Warrington. From him the family pedigree continues as follows:

16. Richard Atherton; mentioned in the Lancashire Visitation fo 1664.

18. Richard Atherton; married Elizabeth Farrington, daughter of William Farrington, of Show Hall. Their daughter Elizabeth was the last in this line to inherit the Atherton name. She married and their son, Robert, assumed the name of Atherton. He married Henrietta Leigh, and their daughter married the second Lord Lilford, Tomas Pows. The Atherton property passed into the hands of Tomas Pows and those of his decsendants.
Sorry that this is so long. My grandfather also had done a sketch of a cake; the american ancestors are on one slice and the english ancestors are on the rest. Here is the way he listed them:
