JAMES ATHERTON shows to be in Hampshire Co., Unknown Twn. Va., image 4 (on Ancestry.com) in 1810. The number 5 is written at the top of the page. Actually is looks like Atherden, rather than Atherton, but I accept anything that close.
The census shows: Males, 2 under age 10, one 26 to 45, females, l under age 10, one 26 to 45. I have not found this in any index. I ran the census for several northern (West) Va. counties.
There are also some Athertons shown in Washington Co. Pa, which was at one time a part of (West) Virginia. I'm pretty sure the ones in Washington Co. Pa. are descendants of the Irish Quaker Henry Atherton of the Warrington, Pa. area. Some of the ones that ended up in Western Pa. were disowned.
My Ebeneazer Eatherton/Atherton first shows up in Rockingham Co. Va. in 1800 when he married Persis Bowyer, whose ancestors came from Berks Co. Pa. Next Eben. shows up in 1820 in Pickaway Co. Ohio. Zachaeus Eatherton shows up in 1819 in Fairfield Co. Ohio, when he married Elizabeth Hammond. I think Ebeneazer are cousin, brothers, or perhaps sons of cousins. The families seems to move together, but I have not been able to make any firm connection.
