...as recently as sixty years ago the horse was the principal means of travel in Northampton. But more pertinent to this discussion, from 1762 (or earlier), when Councillor John Dawson of Bridgers Creek bequeathed his "young horse Exum" to his son [Will of John Dawson, Northampton County Will Books, Office of Clerk of Superion Court, Nothampton County Courthouse, Jackson. Will Book 1, p. 69, hereinafter cited as Will Book(s). John Dawson of Northampton was a member of the North Carolina colonial council from 1745 to 1761 and should not be confused with the John Dawson who married Governor Gabriel Johnston's daughter Penelope in 1758. or with the John Dawson who died im Edgecombe County in 1779.
