Her maiden name was Gertrude Franklin Horn; her mother (Gertrude Franklin) was said to be related to Benjamin Franklin (something like a great-grand niece). I believe her second husband was the Atherton; his name was George Henry Bowen Atherton (1851-1887), whose father was Faxon Dean Atherton, who was from Massachusetts, but became a trader and land speculater, did a lot of business in South America and the California coast. The town of Atherton, CA, is probably named after Faxon Atherton. I know of 2 children from George Henry Bowen Atherton and Gertrude: Geoge Goni Atherton (20 Oct 1876 - 1882), and Muriel Florence Atherton, b. 14 Jul 1878, in Atherton, CA.
