James, I believe is Humphrey's brother. Although some have thought him to be a nephew, son, but I believe he is his brother, since they have the same father, Edmund.
The Atherton line is a direct line for me, my mother's maidian name is Atherton. I do have the line back as far as Humphrey, b: 1550 Winstanley, Wigam, Eng; d: 1582/1641 Winwick, L., Eng; married abt 1575 England to Alice. I found some other Atherton's that are much older when I was going through my grandfather's things, but I not been able to connect them to Humphrey yet. Let me know if there is anything else that I can help you with.
