Derek,

MY BEST WISHES TO YOU .

I DO NO WORK RELATIVE TO THE 20TH C BUT YOU WILL FIND THAT THE NAME BECOMES VERY LOCALISED TO SOUTH LANCS AND FROM LANCASHIRE PARISH REGISTERS IT IS EVIDENT THAT CIRCA 1650 TWO THIRDS OF ALL PERSONS NAMED ATHERTON LIVED EITHER IN THE PARISH OF WIGAN OR PRESCOT .
HOWEVER, THESE WHERE BOTH LARGE PARISHES WITH MORE THAN ONE CHURCH.

FROM MEMORY IN 1881 I THINK THAT THERE WHERE ONLY 8,500 PERSONS IN ENGLAND NAMED ATHERTON AND OF THESE 8,000 DWELT IN LANCASHIRE AND BECAUSE OF POPULATION DISTRIBUTION, AGAIN THE MAJORITY LIVED IN THE SOUTH.

GOOD LUCK,
MIKE
