Dear Edward,

I can appreciate that you feel frustrated in the matter of Humphrey Atherton but I am reluctant to return to a matter that in general terms, I had posted all that I knew in 2005.
Also, my superior provided information at least twice in the last 38 years to people living in the USA.

I picked this matter up again because of the question raised by Michael Egan.

It is not our fault that this information has either not been published in America or as my well be the case , it is not on the Internet.
The Net is not the fountain of all knowledge and in the case of Humphrey Atherton information is posted again and again and again and yet again which has no foundation in fact and in the matter of English Geography is wild beyond any reasonable belief.

It may well be that some information in full detail has been conveyed by me on a one to one basis but this is because these people gave me copies of "ORIGINAL AND CONTEMPORY NEW ENGLAND HISTORY DURING THE 17th C in the matter of Humphrey Atherton and his family. So, it was only fair that I provided every last detail that is available to me , here in England.

However, in the interests of continued good Anglo American relations I set out a brief reply as to source of what I have said about Humphrey.
BUT DO KEEP IN MIND THAT THIS IS JUST ONE MAN OF A NUMBER NAMED HUMPHREY.

1/ Humphrey the son of Edmund was Baptised in the Chapelry of Up Holland, Parish of Wigan in 1607. The register is held by the ""Lancashire Record Office or LRO ".

2/ The Will of his father Edmond was Probated in Chester in 1614 and LRO have the original Will.

3/ In 1613 "Lancashire Inquisitions Post Mortems for that year" state that Edmund died in 1613 and his son Humphrey is his Heir.
Now there is an error as Humphrey is stated to be aged IV but based on the Baptism reg he is aged VI.
I believe that the former is a clerical error and that he is aged 6 years. This document is held by LRO.

4/ In 1593 there is a land dispute between Humphrey Atherton senior and Edward Winstanley re land in Winstanley.
In 1596 the matter is settled by the transfer of some land in Billinge and the Atherton parties are Humphrey senior, his wife Alice and his son Edmund.
Source, Palatine of Lancaster, Feet of Fines, Bundle 59, manuscript 21.
If LRO do not hold these then they will be with The National Archive, Kew, LONDON.

5/ The Historian William Farrer states in THe Victoria County History of Lancashire, VOL 5 of 8, page 89, footnote 17 that he has some old deeds relating to this family and in particular Romeshaw House.
I have read, but cannot remember where, that Humphrey lets this house to an Uncle and I did wonder if this could be because he is "going away but may return" ?

I believe this answers your question of November 21.

However,
WHY is it that you are prepared to accept that Humphrey was Baptised in Up Holland in 1607?
I have never exibited a document to evidence this.
Is it because there is a reference to this on the Net ?
