A thought about Betty vs Elizabeth:
In my family tree I have two other 3g grandmothers who used the name Betsey as a young wife, but used Elizabeth when they were older.

The OnLine Parish Clerk of Wigan has church records at:

www.lan-opc.org.uk/Wigan/index.html

The Atherton surname is very common in Wigan, so documenting a connection in the 18th century would be very difficult.
