If you can get back to around 1650, then please contact me.
I have ten thousand plus records for Athertons in South Lancashire for the period 1300 to 1650 and I would expect your family and mine to be related in that a man named Piers Atherton moved to this area in the late middle ages and almost everyone in the area you are looking at appears to descend from him as at 1650. After 1650, I cannot say as the population becomes more mobile and because Atherton is a place name not all Athertons are related.
