Lisa, I am a descendent of one Hiram Atherton, born 17 October, 1812, who was married to Almira Gardiner. Hiram and William Henry were sons of Otis Atherton of Mansfield, MA, and Susannah Burr, whom he married in Mansfield. Their children were Henry, Charlie, Charlotte, Hiram, Mary, Phillip, William Henry, Betsy, Hannah, Susanah, and Rachael. Hiram and his second wife, Rebecca Thurber, lived in the "R. Foster Cellar" house in Boxford, MA from about 1835. William Henry and Hiram also lived in Boxford at that time. Hiram Atherton and Almira Gardiner had three children: Julia Atherton Peabody (Mrs. John), George Washington Atherton(who became 7th president of Penn State University), and Harriet Atherton Sanderson (Mrs. Jacob). Hiram died when the ship he was taking to the gold fields of California went down and all perished. This left Almira alone with the children. She moved in with William Henry and their family, also residents of Boxford, and lived on the second floor of the W.H. Atherton home on Lawrence Road. Hope this helps.
