I have read all the messages posted, and found a lot of similar information to that collected by Herbert Q Ator of Mineral Wells, Texas. I, too, have heard stories of the name Ater being changed to Ator. The information I have shows a Kasper Eder, also shown as Casper Ater (b abt 1720), father of Mathias Dout Ator. Interestingly, information I have shows that all of Mathias Dout's siblings retained the Ater spelling, except him. Further, the information I have shows Mathias Dout Ator (b. abt 1767) was father of Henry Ator (b abt 1788), father of Mathias Dout Ator (b abt Oct 12, 1812), brother of Abram Bidel Ator and father of Warthadas Ator. Warthadas Ator is buried in Stephenville, Texas, or at least has a tombstone there, born Dec 7, 1839, died Aug 31, 1910. He and his second wife Elizabeth Howell had one child, Julius Baxter Ator, born Mar 14, 1870, died Jan 15, 1941, and buried in Stephenville, Texas. Julius Baxter Ator married Vilena Keith and had 6 children. Their second child, Thad, was my grandfather. My father is Robert Duncan Ator. I am not sure of the accuracy of information beyond 2 or 3 generations back, but I am certain that my great grandfather was Julius Baxter Ator. I have seen several of the tombstones with the Ator spelling. In Lipan, Texas is a cemetery with some of the children of Mathias Dout Ator, who was born Oct 12, 1812 in McNairey County, TN. He was married to Mary Ann McDaniel, and two of their sons, Henry (b Aug 29, 1854) and Parrott (b Apr 7, 1858) have tombstones in the Lipan cemetery.
