The San Luis Valley Historical Society has several back issues of their quartly magazine that have articles relating to natives being owned by the Spaniards (as Slaves). Luckily, most of the natives were purchased in an effort to SAVE them rather than use them as slaves. Most became a vital part of the family.
During some of the local wars between the colonists and natives, many of the children became orphans and were adopted by the colonists. There is at least one reference of a native child who was adopted by an Atencio family.
I suggest you write to: THE SAN LUIS VALLEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY, INC.
P.O. BOX 982, ALAMOSA, COLORADO 81101
(719) 589-9217
They will do an initial search and let you know what back issues pertain to your query.
The Atencio families who settled in CO and NM commonly lived in either state for a season or two. They were constantly moving back and forth. You will find the Atencio name throughout both states.
Hope this helps. If you could give me the names of a few genearations of your Atencio name I will see if they connect to any of the back issues I have from the SLVH (San Luis Valley Historian, magazine.)
Happy Hunting!
