Samuel Aston (Alston) in South Carolina
I am looking for any info on a Samuel Aston (Alston) who died, per his will in 1808, Fairfield Co. SC. He was born in 1741, maybe in N. Ireland, but could have been Scotland, or possibly the Lancashire region of England.
Samuel Alston came on the ship the Earl of Donegall which sailed from Belfast, N. Ireland in September 1767 with 266 passengers and reached Charleston, SC on December 10, 1767. Agents for this ship recruited in Ballymoney and Ballymena, Co. Antrim, as well as in Belfast. Samuel originated from Antrim and was listed among the Protestants list when he arrived in Charleston. He received 100 acres of land - Craven Dist. - where exactly I don't yet know, as Craven in SC at this time was a very large district, comprising almost half of the current SC state.
Upon arrival, the SC officials misspelled Samuel's name, and listed him as Samuel Aston. I have a copy of this document from the SC Archives, in which Samuel Aston recieved his 100 acres, April 1768. Samuel Alston after that listed himself in documents as Samuel Aston, as he did in his will, proved Sept.29, 1808.
Samuel had a son named William Aston mentioned in his will, along with two daughters, Peggy and Betty. Cannot find anything else on the son, William after this will.
I am searching for my "brick-wall" ancestor Peter B. Alston, born in SC about 1796 (1850 census). In 1819, Peter was issued a bond for his marriage to Martha H. King in Halifax, NC. The bond lists him as "Peter Alston", but he signed his name "Peter Aston". After this document however he was known always as "Alston". I also have suspected that the family of my Peter may have moved to North Carolina at some point before this time.
With this Samuel Alston coming to SC in 1767, and being then known as Samuel Aston, my interest in him is piqued with the signature of my ggg grandfather on his marriage bond. Any help in connecting these - Samuel, William, his son, and possibly my Peter will be appreciated.
