Hello again, cuzzie! (that's a Maori expression for cousin!) Seriously, Joy - it is fascinating checking our family lineage, though I am not really into genealogy! I think my interest was sparked by meeting with Richard Aslin here in NZ about 10 years ago, whose g.g.g.grandmother (I think - but I may have one too many g.'s!) came out here from Oxton, a village close to Gedling where I was brought up. She brought about 11 children with her, having lost her husband in a riding accident, I was told by Richard. So we had just begun our quest into trying to find if we were related but sadly he developed a brain tumour and eventually died from it. The other Aslins here didnt seem as interested as he had been so it petered out.
But then I checked a genealogy site for the name Aslin and came across all the references listed. I replied to one (an American) but I was obviously not interesting enough and that fizzled out. then I was flabbergasted to get a reply to my original posting one year later, and it was the same day that I had been reading a couple of old letters my Dad had received from a lady in Surrey about the Aslins! I had decided I would write to her tho the letters were over ten years old and I wasnt sure if she would still be at the address. But believe it or not, she was the person who responded to me through this genealogy site and the one who supplied me later with a marvellous family tree she has compiled. She must have put years of work into it!
The origin of the name Aslin, as I understand it, comes from Goisfried de Ancelin or Hanselin or Aslin who came over with William the Conqueror! Can you believe! My Dad used to tell us that and as kids we thought it was another of his "tall tales" he had a reputation for telling! But apparently it is true. My Dad was obviously trying to investigate the Aslins and that is how he contacted this lady in Surrey who wrote back to him (and whose letters my sister gave me from dad's papers when our mother died).(Long story, eh!)
When back in England this year, I borrowed a book from the local library which was a modern Domesday Book and there is quite a bit of info in that about Goisfried which ties up with the "History of Gedling" stuff by Miss Swan. You might be able to get it at your library if you are interested. The library I used was Carlton Library.
By the way I live in a beautiful part of New Zealand called Pinehaven in the Hutt Valley. Upper Hutt is our nearest town (or city, as it has city status in NZ because the population numbers are smaller here to be called a city) and a suburb of Upper Hutt is called Trentham! with that I must close. Keep in touch - warm regards. Kate
