French spelling, beginning with Jacques and David was Ancelin, France to New France, Canada in about 1650. Name evolved next to Asselin until migration to U.S., after which it branches out to other spellings depending upon State of entry - and the nationality of person recording the information. Aslin, Asselin, Asseline, Ancelin, Azlin, even Ashley are some of the spellings I've come across.
