Sallie, I believe that your John Askins who married Nancy Starner 15 Jun 1841 is the oldest son of Jonathan Askins and wife Lavina Smith Delano, a widow. I am a descendant of Lavina through her first husband, Stephen Delano, who was killed by Indians in 1818. I will paste my notes for this Jonathan:
1820 Knox Co. OH census, Bloomfield Twp, shows 1 male 16-26, 1 female 26-45, 1 male under 10, and 3 females under 10. The 3 females would be Lavina's children from her first marriage.
1830 Knox Co. OH census (p 93/282 in Bloomfield Twp) shows John Askins with 1 male under 5, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 30-40; 1 female under 5, 3 females 5-10, 1 female 10-15 and 1 female 20-30 [sic]. Also in this area were Reuben, William, Robert and Jesse Askins, with Reuben being by far the oldest, in the 50-60 age range.
1840 Shelby Co. IL census (p 197) lists Jonathan Askins with 1 male 5-10, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 40-50; 1 female 5-10, 1 10-15, 1 15-20 and 1 40-50. Since all 3 of Lavina's daughters from her first marriage had married before 1840, all these children must be hers and Jonathan's, unless they have some one else in their home.
Knox Co. OH marriage records include a Jonathan Askins to Lavina Dillinoe [sic] on 21 Oct 1819. She was the widow of Stephen Delano with 3 young daughters.
Shelby Co. IL marriage records include a Jonathan Askins to Addocia Hill 24 Jun 1844 by Eli Hooper.
1850 Effingham Co. IL census (p 323a house #553) lists Johnathan Aspen [sic] 58 VA farmer; Dacher [sic] 33 NC; George 16 OH; Sarah E. 3 IL and Wm. T. age 1 month, census taken 16 Oct. Also in the home was John Aspen 35 OH farmer; Nancy 34 OH; Wm. 5 IL; Sarah 3 IL; and Johnathan 6/12 Illinois. Next door was James Starm 31 OH with wife Susan and sons Wm. and Thomas, that maybe could be a brother to Nancy Starner, the wife of the younger John Askins. Then William T. Barr and Susan and their children, with Margaret Ditton [sic] 54 PA in the next house.
1860 Effingham Co. IL census (p 141 #1010 Ervington PO) lists Dica Askins 40 NC; Elizabeth 13 IL; and Thos. 10 IL. Nearby was William S. Barr and Susan. Also Geo. C. Eckles 58 and wife Nancy with Wm. Askins 14, Lavina Askins 12, and Jonathan Askins 10.
I would like to discuss this family with you so hope you will see this message.
