Thomas definitely married Sarah Ellen as I double checked this against the Lancashire BMD records and their census record of 1891 states her name as "Sarah E. Spencer". The story goes that Thomas Edward originally went by the name of Baron but then realized he was actually illegitimate (his father died before he was conceived!) and decided to go by the last name of Spencer, his mother's maiden name.

In 1891, the couple had children Annie E. (presumably the "E" is for Ellen like her mother) and Clara. Clara eventually married and moved to Australia, but I'm not sure what happened to Annie.

I found this record in 1881... do you think it is a likely candidate for my family?

1881 ENGLAND CENSUS

Household:

Name Relation Marital Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation Disability
William WALMSLEY Head M Male 54 Wimberry Naze, Lancashire, England Outdoor Laborer
Dorothy WALMSLEY Wife M Female 49 Cowpe Lenches, Lancashire, England
Sarah E. WALMSLEY Daur U Female 16 Underwood, Lancashire, England Cotton Weaver
Margret J. WALMSLEY Daur U Female 12 Fall Barn, Lancashire, England Scholar
Elizabeth A. WALMSLEY Grand Child Female 2 Hall Carr, Lancashire, England

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Source Information:
Dwelling Cawl Top No 1
Census Place Cowpe Lench Newhall Hey & Hall Carr, Lancashire, England
Family History Library Film 1341989
Public Records Office Reference RG11

Cowpe Lench Newhall Hey & Hall Carr is a part of Rawtenstall and is very close to Clough-fold.

I have *NO* idea where "Wimberry Naze" is or for that matter where Fall Barn and Underwood are exactly. I'm thinking they may be specific locations near Rawtenstall but I can't find out anything about them...

That's my ideas at the moment anyway. Thanks for your help!!
