I had not (yet) checked early York County records, nor did I think of checking Lower Norfolk County. But, I'd bet good money that references to a John Ashton in those records are to the same man; they are certainly within the range of dates that I found him in Warwick records.

The Royalist theory is "enhanced" by his association with Francis Dade in Warwick County - a Royalist who went by the alias John Smith during his early Colonial sojourn.
