Maria Ashelford m M.Kennedy, Ireland
The maiden name of my wife's great-great grandmother was Maria Ashelford. She married Michael Kennedy (place and date unknown) and gave birth to Christopher John Kennedy on the outskirts of Dublin, Ireland, on 11 December 1875.I have a photocopy of the civil birth record, which indicates that Michael was a harness maker who lived on Clarence Steet.Thom's Directory shows that the address was 14 Clarence Street in what was then known as Kingston, but is now the port city of Dun Laoghaire.Christopher John Kennedy told the Canadian government at the outset of World War II that his mother, Maria, came from County Sligo (northwest part of the country) and that his father came from County Wicklow, which is just south of Dublin.
The Ashelford surname is clearly English, and I have not yet found others with this surname in Ireland over 100 years ago.I would, of course, appreciate hearing from anyone who many have information on Maria Ashelford's ancestry.
