Penny, I do not know if this will be of any help but I am searching my husbands side of our family and his GG Grandfather was Thomas Ashdown born 1836 approx, he married a Bella Vinnie and owned a Electric Plater business in Titchfield Street, London he had the coat of arms over his door as he often cleaned the jewellery for the royal family, they had 16 children of which the first 8 died in infancy but the 2nd 8 all lived. One of the children was called Thomas, his brothers and sisters were Rose, Popy, Harry, Eloxa, Minnie, Jane and Amy. Minnie maried Henry Denyer-Radford who was Paul, my husband's, G Grandmother. Minnie Ashdown's parents,Thomaas and Bella were reputed to be Quakers but I have no evidence to substanciate this. I have not researched Thomas's history so do not know if he joined the Navy but the dates, approx, do match. Please return message if anything rings a bell. Good hunting

Sue Monk
