Patricia,

Our family is descended from Stephen Ashby through his daughter Nancy, who married Lewis Fugate. Past information indicates that Stephen Ashby was a General in the War of 1812 and I suppose there is proof, but I haven't researched that as yet. However, Maurice Gordan wrote a book on the "History of Hopkins County, Kentucky," and on page 287 he discusses the forming of the 76th Regiment of the Militia on January 30, 1809. He states that Stephen Ashby was the first Colonel of the 76th and continues that Vincent Fugate and others were the Captains.

Maurice has other references to Stephen Ashby in the book, which covers the County in great depth.
