Donald,

Let me refer you to a Rootsweb response from Ernie Ashby on this subject. His e-mail address is in this excerpt and you may want to make contact.

"Getting back to John W. his first wife was Frances, LNU and they had one child, William, born abt 1798. Frances died abt 1799 in Stokes Co. NC. John W. married Mourning Guthrie in 1802 in Halifax Co. Va. and was a witness to the 1805 marriage of Cuthbert Ashby and Nancy Lands in Halifax Co. Va. Both families moved to Stokes Co. NC and lived near each other until after 1830 when Cuthbert moved his family to Russell Co. Va. John W. died in 1857 in Stokes Co. NC

I will be happy to share any pertinent info. that I have with you regarding the Halifax Co. Ashbys. I am also the Co-Admin. of the Ashby Surname YDNA project at www.ftdna.com You may contact me at ernieashby@gmail.com YDNA is an essential tool for confirming paper trails and is evident in this particular case."
