While researching our ASHBAUGH family of Robert William, Jacob Jr. and Jacob Sr. ASHBAUGH we found records of Jacob ESHBAUGH purchasing a tract of land known as Piney Groves in Anne Arundel in 1760. An abstract of a will for a John ASHPAW in 1766 cites wife Elizabeth, sons John, Frederick, Jacob, Henry and George as well as daughters Elizabeth, Margaret and Catron and son-in-law John ROLLES. It mentions John ASHPAW having interests in a tract of land known as Gosnell’s Choice in Anne Arundel and land in New Hanover Twp. in Pennsylvania as well. We are still waiting for a copy of that will but did find other land records in Anne Arundel in which have“...Jacob ASHPAW of Siscel County in the Province of Maryland... “ selling Piney Groves to Henry ASHPAW in 1766 and in again 1769 Jacob Eshbaugh, “late of Ann Arundel...but now of Ceaicil County..” selling his interest in Piney Groves to a Joseph Pumphrey. Records in Cecil Co. in 1767 show Jacob ASHBOUGH buying on credit items from a Nicholas Hyland. We’ve tried and been unable to find another Jacob in Cecil County that could be Jacob ASHPAW other than Jacob ASHBAUGH Sr. Jacob ASHBAUGH Sr. married Sarah BOYER and this record shows Sarah ASHPAW, wife of Jacob, declaring “...that she relinquished her right of Dower to the within mentioned lands of her own voluntary free will...” Documents in Cecil Co. show Jacob and Sarah Ashbaugh having son Jacob and daughters Rachel (married John YOUNG), Ann (married Richard RUTTER) and Elizabeth (married Thomas CULBERTSON). Jacob Jr. moved first to Beaver Co., PA where he married Mary BOYD, daughter of Robert and Sarah BOYD, and then to Perry Co., Ohio c1821.
George ASHBOUGH and Henry ASHPAW remained in Anne Arundel where they are found in the 1790 census. John ASHBAW resides in Anne Arundel in the 1800 census as well. We are unsure of where Frederick is though a land record in 1792 has one “Jacob ASHPAW, son of Frederick of York Co., NY” selling their interest to the tract known as Gosnell’s Choice which is mentioned the abstract of John’s will. We believe that the reference to York Co., NY is actually in York Co., PA as we can find no record of a York County in New York. We are interested in learning more about the ASHPAW family of Anne Arundel and the connection of John ASHPAW to New Hanover Twp., PA. We are also seeking information about his wife Elizabeth (nee unknown). We’ve found no references to our ASHBAUGH family residing in Anne Arundel before but have been unable to dismiss this connection with other data. We appreciate your feed back and any assistance you might offer!
