Lyn - lynolm@yahoo.com - wrote on June 27, 1999: I do research in Quebec Province quite often, sometimes as often as once a week. If you send me your information I will check it out for you for free. I am very good at research as I research for authors and attorneys. I love to help families for free, the other pays my bills. I have access to marriage, baptism and death records in Quebec Province as I know quite a few people. Be sure and write, I really would love to help. Grosse Île and the Irish Memorial National Historic Site commemorates the importance of immigration to Canada, particularly via the port of entry of Québec, from the early 19th century to the First World War. Grosse Île also commemorates the tragic events experienced by the Irish immigrants on this site, primarily during the typhoid epidemic of 1847. The commemoration on this site is also based on the role the island played from 1832-1937 as a quarantine station for the Port of Québec, long the main port of arrival for immigrants to Canada. Finally, Grosse Île bears witness to the work of Dr. Frédérick Montizambert in the field of preventive medicine and public health in Canada. Grosse Ile is found just offshore from Montmagny, on the south shore of the St Lawrence River. The Drouin Marriage Indexes are a compilation of all Roman Catholic marriages in Quebec, English and French. The blue collection is the most useful, with between 1 and 2 million marriages, mostly in Quebec, sometimes from neighboring areas. Each book has 2 parts, roughly 1765-1880 and 1880-1935, but the 2nd part has many marriages before 1880. Not all Quebec marriages are included. Before 1765, use the well-known Red Drouin; 49 volumes sorted by men and 64 volumes sorted by women. The rest of Quebec remained under the old French seigneurial system. The same type of “township” system had been set up in Southern Ontario but the name “Western Townships” was never in common use. Basically, the Québec Eastern Townships extended from Farnham south to the VT border along Lake Champlain, east to Lac Mégantic near the Maine border, then north almost to Drummondville, and westwards back to Farnham. The area was extremely large at first, but it got broken up in bits and pieces over the years. Part was lost to Beauce, les Bois Franc and so on. In Québec, there are a number of moderately-priced maps showing regions, for example “Estrie Plus” which shows all the country roads of the Eastern Townships. There are others like this one for other regions. A number of cadastral plans can be used to find the exact location of the ancestor's farm. _______________________ Bonne chance et bien à toi !
