I'm glad that I'm back from my meetings and able to correct my prior post.

If the age at death on Peter's tombstone has been correctly transcribed, he was born between Nov. of 1785 and Nov. of 1787, depending on whether he died aged 86 years, or in the "86th year of his age," as it was often phrased.

That's substantially in advance of the date when Peter Ash Sr. married Catherine Merrihew. But Peter was already about 27 or 28 years old by 1786. There is no particular reason why he should have waited untilt after age 30 to marry. So I suspect that there was a first marriage, and Peter Ash Jr. was the product of that marriage.

On the other hand, Peter Ash Sr. is not listed by name on the 1790 census of Halfmoon, so it's difficult to know where he was that year.

In contrast, William Ash Jr. was living by his father (and, presumably three brothers, as the 1790 lists three males above 16 years old in the home of William Sr.). William Jr. had three males under 16 in the home, so this raises the question whether Peter Ash the younger who married Sally Hillman was actually the son of William Ash Jr., and not of Peter Sr.

As you no doubt know, in those days the "Jr." after a man's name just meant "younger." It didn't necessarily indicate that he was the son of whoever was called "Sr." locally.

Now as to children for Peter & Sally (Hillman) Ash, I had supposed that the two women buried right next to them at Broadalbin were their daughters. "Depsy Ash wife of William Coppernoll d. Jun 5, 1877, aged 66 years 4 mos. and 12 days." "Margaret Ann wife of Seth Cook d. Aug. 27, 1881 aged 67 years 4 mos." I haven't looked at my 1820 & 1830 census notes for Peter Ash II for a very long time, but believe that those census entries would support the idea that Peter & Sally had at least these two children.
