Philip....sounds like you are my cousin from Goondiwindi. If you are, then I have a bunch of new information for you regarding our great grandfather, George Washington Ash and our grandfather, George Powell, who came to Australia from Louisville. I am sending my mother (Winifred Ash) a package with some documents I had copied at The Filson Historical Society when I went to Kentucky in October this year. If you contact Mum she will be happy to show you them!
If you don't know her contact details, email me!

One thing--George Powell Ash is one of three children from George Washington's *second* marriage, not his first as you said. I do not know the name of his first wife (her maiden name was probably 'Powell'--hence giving her first son the second name of Powell), but George Washington had at least three children from that former marriage: Tom, Lula and John. The census records of 1900 shows John was 19 and still living at home with his father. Lula and Tom were not living at home and so did not appear on that census entry.

In 1900, George Washington was 55 and his wife was just 27. Geroge Powell-(our Pop Ash)- was 6 years old. He had two younger sisters; Melvie A (Ann?) who was 4 and Anna Louise who was 1 year old. I have the address of Melvie descendant, Melvia Johnson if you want it. She's lovely. Anna Louise died in 1948. Pop Ash (George Powell) continued to write to Melvie his sister from Australia all his life and they were quite close. (Oh, how I would love to see those letters!)

When George Powell's mother, Mary Melvia, died in about 1901 or 1902, he and his two younger sisters went to live with Lula, most probably on The Brentlinger Tobacco farm that we so often heard grandfather speak of. Plenty more information I have gathered. Email me if you are interested in discussing it more. I have sent Mum the photos I took of Brentlinger Lane. It is truly beautiful.
