I am researching my McKenney (and related) families in early Harrison County, Virginia. They were likely in the area before the formation of that county - when it was Monongalia County.
In 1789 James McKenney and his wife, Mary [Beaty], sold 350 acres to Thomas Asbury on Simpson Creek. In 1801 Thomas and Elizabeth Asberry sold that same land to Edward Roger of Prince William County.
Margaret Mary Asberry m. William Lake in 1768 - I think in Fauquier County, Virginia. But that family eventually settled in Harrison County.
In Harrison County: Sarah Lake married Stephen Neel in 1819; Jane/Jinny Lake married William Neel in 1815. Lancelot and Sarah Behan/Bahan sold land to William Lake and later the widow, Sarah, sold additional land to William for $1. [In 1809]
I keep finding that the same surnames are interrealted in one manner or another: Lake, Asberry, McKenney, Mackie/McKee, Neel/Neal, Behan/Bahan.
If there is anyone who is researching any of these surnames in connection to Asbury/Asberry/Ashberry, I would like to share information and ideas with you.
I have reason to believe that my direct McKenney line came from Maryland before settling in the Harrison County region.
