My research has shown that Aaron Asbell was actually the son of Margaret Asbell. She was the oldest daughter of Martin Asbell. Joseph was Aaron's Uncle. According to records, Margaret was arrested for "repeated bastard getting". Court records indicate Aaron, son of Margaret Asbell, was made apprentice to Thomas Ward. His brother was also taken in by the same Thomas Ward when Margaret died. Their little sister was taken in by a neighbor of Thomas Ward at the same time. Asbill Y-DNA testing from lines established to be descended from Aaron didnt match other Asbell lines, but DID match exactly another Y-DNA project that was also taking place with descendants of Thomas Ward.
The Joseph Ward line was made by Bennett who was wrong about other things, too. He places the original Asbell, Martin, with another family line, when in reality he is said to have been brought here as a 12 year old orphan indentured servant on the ship Oliver. He was indentured originally to William Chambers, then to Thomas Pitman, Jr.
Researchers have said they believe his family in England had been Sephardic Anusim. I wonder what happened to his family. It sounds like a sad beginning to our American roots to me.
