Corinth Mississippi May the 21, 1862
Dear Wife,
It is with much ___ that I drop you these few lines to let you know that I am well [and] hoping to find you the same.I received your kind letter last Sunday and was glad to hear from you.I have wrote (sic) several letters but have not received any answers.We went on picket last Sunday.The whole brigade goes at a time.The Yankeys (sic) are in about three miles.We was (sic) posted in about five hundred yards of them.The pickets are firing on each other all the time as they was ____ us.They fired and wounded one man in our Regiment.They give us orders to lie down.You better know that there was some flat lying.I got______behind Mr. Horne.We both lay very close to the ground but it did not appear so at the time.The balls flew over right smart but I did not think that I would be hit and thank God I was not.It is not so dangerous if ___keep wide awake.The way that we picket, they put three men in a place about thirty yards a part for seven miles and if the enemy comes we get behind trees and [let] them have the best that we (line obstructed by Library of Congress stamp).….paper that I am writing on.Write as soon as you get this.Nothing more but remain your loving husband until death.
