I found a web site which compares money values from the past to today and the $518.80 would take $53,800.00 of unskilled labor wages to equal this amount in today's economy.
The widow paid $63 for Fannie, a mare; this would equal $5,180 in tody's unskilled labor wages to buy this horse. One would be hard pressed to sell a horse for $5,000 today, it must have been a fine trotter and well broke to the wagon or cart.
