Jane, I believe you have described the ARTZ family that I am trying to connect to my Smith family in Lewis County, NY. I have obituary information for Carrie A. MAX that says that her parents John SMITH m. Mary ARTZ (date unknown). Working backward from the 1870, the timeline for birth of Mary ARTZ in abt. 1850 fits with the ARTZ family of New Bremen you describe arriving NY in 1847. Do you have any additional information about Mary, the daughter of John ARTZ that could link your Mary ARTZ to mine?
