Brenda; The spelling that you mentioned is not uncommon. It has been spelled ARTZ,ARZT,ARNTZ,ARTZT,ARZTS , ORTZ, OTT.
It is derived from the German word for Doctor, ARZT, but I have never found any Doctors in my research. In the early 18th century is was pronounced ORTS, but written ARTZ.
