This is the information on the Artrips that I have collected in the last tweve years. Unfortunately I wasn't in to verification of my sources when I started, so I'm not suggesting that my findings are totally accurate. Please feel free to point out errors. WV Submitted by John Snyder From Brumbaugh's book we read the following about Michael Reader's Company of Dunmore County and his Revolutionary War muster roll. "Dunmore County was formed from Frederick County in 1772 and named in honor of Lord Dunmore, then Governor of Virginia (1771-1776). His loyalty to England made the name unacceptable, and it was changed, by Act of the State Legislature in Oct., 1777, to "Shanando." The County originally embraced not only present Shenandoah, but also two-thirds of Page and half of Warren, and included this territory at the time of the Revolution. Thus the men enrolled under Capt. Michael Reader were from what is now Page County, and those enrolled under Capt. Joseph Bowman were from what is now Warren County. This is evident from a comparison of the names on the muster rolls with the names on the census lists here published and on the lists of the 1785 census published in "A History of Shenandoah County, Va., " by John W. Wayland." (In Revoultionary War Records Volume 1, Virginia, by Gaius Marcus Brumbaugh, Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, Reprinted 1967, page 590) The Michael Reader muster roll is decorated at the top with a drawing of a canon, drum and flag. It is written on one large sheet of paper, about 12" by 15", folded once, so that the columns of names are on the left edges of each of the four sides. The name "M. Reader" appears on the outside of the folded sheet. The little x's and other markings appear to be attendance records. The original muster roll is identified as manuscript #3D9217a11-15 in the collection of the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond. The following is an alphabetical list of names that appear on the muster roll. Of interest to this transcriber is the appearance of his Artrip ancestors on this Revolutionary War muster roll. (CHERWDUN5977@cs.com) Cheryl Wallen-Duncan May be Harve. Names pronounced Artup. The Artrips who settled in Artrip and Finney were from Norway and were an Old Amish Order. They did not want the outside world intruding on them. I remember it being very strange. they were farmers. I remember lots of sheep always being in the road and having to get out of the car and shoo them away and going with some of the children in the evening to do the milking of the catte. The children of Sarah Sally Artrip and James M. Smith are: Albert, Henry, Joseph, Fullen, Mary, Floyd, Cowan and Richard. Sally's parents were James H. Artrip and Mary "Polly" Kiser. James father was John, whose father was Colbert, the progenitor of all Artrips in America. You might find the census index study helpful that I posted on the Wayne County, WV GenWeb Archives. It has all the Artrips that I could find in census indices from 1783 to 1910. I'd love to here more about your connection. My mother, Juanita Artrip, was a descendant from James H. Artrip's brother William. Hope to hear from you again. Am I correct in thinking that Sarah Counts Smith is the daughter of John D. Counts and Margaret Kelly? If you have any info on James' parents, I would appreciate your sending it. I am descended from Joshua and Sarah Sutherland Smith through their daughter Phoebe. James and Sarah Smith are as far back as I can trace the Smith family. Thank you for your help. Just that he was a merchant in Cleveland and moved to MO. You know his younger brother moved to MO for a time. He returned home when he was older, but I bet some of his settled there. In case you don't have their names, they are: James M. Smith had a brother named Henry. They were born the same yr. 1829. Is that correct? They married sisters: James M. m. Sarah "Sallie" Artrip & Henry m. Mary "Polly" Artrip. Those Smiths sure loved the Artrips. ha. You tell me that your Henry m. a Cook. His sister Mary m. a Cook. Thought I'd share as there are names besides my ancestors' on them. My great grandfather is Henry Clinton Smith. He was the Sheriff of Russell County around the turn of the Century. He and his wife, Rachel Almira Cook and her father D. K. (Doctor Kanan) Cook, seemed to buy and sell a lot of property. The following deed is handwritten in ink on a legal pad piece of paper (two pages). I love the plat description. I would also love to know where it is now. I know that my great grandparents had a white house on the Clinch River. When I went there a few years ago hoping to find it, what I found were dozens of "white houses" on the Clinch River. I just had to laugh when I saw them all. My aunt and uncle had been there in the 1970's, and they thought they found the house. They said it had been moved up higher on the hill to keep it from flooding. When they asked about the Cooks, a storekeeper said, "Oh the hills are full of them!" "This deed made this the 20th day of July 1897 between Jacob Minnick and Margerette L. Minnick his wife of the County Russell and State of virginia of the first part, and H. C. Smith and D. K. Notes for CLOVIS KANAN SMITH: In a letter to his mother, Clovis writes on December18, 1907 from Valpo(postmark on envelope is Harris, MO) (The letter is written on Telegram paper from the Pennsylvania Lines of West Pittsburgh.) Dear Mother, I find it only too true that an ogir (?) is going to have a hard time to get a job from now until the 1st of March. The Grand Trunk, the Penna, the Chgo and Alton, E.J. & E, the Rock Island and in fact every road that I have tried has more men than they can handle now so I find that it will be cheaper for me to come home and wait then I will go to Ft Wayne about Sunday for Examinations. I guess I will have to stay there about two or thre days and that will pull my money down very short indeed and I wont have enough to come home on so I thought if you could send me $15 dollars I would await my call there. I have enough to last me in Ft Wayne and will probably leave a little left. When I got your last 20 I paid up my board and room rent bought me some underwear a sweater and a pair of rubbers and other little things I had to have. I am not discouraged in the least, but it seems that I have hard luck every since I started but I was placed here by the R. R. Co., and they have got to give me a chance but any chance may be a long way off for they have 3 extra men in this town which will be ahead of me so I thought the best thing I could do was to come home and when they needed me they could call me. I would like to start about next Wednesday if you can get my fare to me by that time. Hoping you are all well I will close. Lovingly, Clovis He evidently finally got a job and less than three years after this letter he was killed by a train. Killed by a Santa Fe engine.
