An indenture dated September 3, 1754 between a Richard Peacock and Roger Dixon is the earliest document that I know of for descendants of Colburt Artrup. In this document the last name used for Colbert, wife Mary and three children William, John Harvey and Anne is Artrup. In another indenture involving the apprenticeship of John Harvey (above) to a Thomas Blanton dated August 5, 1760, John signed his name Artrip. In a book entitled Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution by Gwathmey, pg 23, published by Geanealogical Publishing, William (above) is listed as Artrip. So the Artrip spelling appears as early as the second generation in 1754. It has been suggested that they are just phonetic differences, not necessarily a deliberate legal change. By the way, my line is Colbert (1), John Harvey (2), William (3), Alia (4), Lindsey (5), Boyd (6), Juanita May Artrip Snyder (7), who is my mother. Hope this helps. John Snyder
