Just found the Arter queries. I have seen the Arter Bible which was given to Dr. Daniel Arter by his 5 daughters at the Pulaski Co., Illinois library. A copy of the Bible entry
Is found in the Spring, 1988 coppy of The Saga of Southern Illinois, an genealogy quarterly. In a footnote it states that Dr. Arter arter was Surveyor and Collector of the Port of Cairo appointed by President Lincoln
and resigned when the war was over. He also published a pamphlet of his religious and theological beliefs. It also states that Dr. Arter divorced his wife Mary, 12 Oct. 1837 on the grounds of desertion. Union County Circuit Court Records Book C pp. l60. Dr. Arter's oldest daughter Sarah Rebecca is my husband's gr-gr-grandmother. I have a copy of The Arter/Arthur Family of Fountain Valley. It lists Laura J. Arter's husband as Stephen Wood Rittenhouse, born l836, Cleveland, died 1896, Cairo, Illinois. I would be glad to share any other information I have.
