Henry,
I have not seen the actual marriage record but Jean Bernard notes the dispensation as … & 4-4c double, so this means that Meleme and Madeleine were double 3rd cousins (as stated).
However, I worked out the dispensation and they were actually 2nd cousins through their grandparents: Anne Arsenault (wife of Nicolas Cormier) and Cyprien Arsenault (husband of Marie Bourque); Anne and Cyprien being sister and brother.
And double third cousins through their greaat-grandparents: Marguerite Boudrot (wife of Joseph Arsenault) and Marie-Josephe Boudrot (wife of Jacques Haché-Gallant); Marguerite and Marie-Josephe being sisters.
And through Meleme's great-grandmother: Nathalie Arsenault (wife of Joseph Bernard) and Madeleine's grandfather Jean-Baptiste Arsenault (husband of Madeleine Gallant); Nathalie and Jean-Baptiste being sister & brother.
So the dispensations should actually read: disp. 3-3c, 3-4c & 4-4c.The pastor must have rounded off the last two to simply 4-4c double.
If you list the generations from Meleme and Madeleine back, by their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents, you can actually draw lines between the two columns to see the relationships. The following will illustrate this.If the names move, make them into two columns (I have tried to space them apart using dots, which do NOT mean any relationship between the columns, just to separate them):
Meleme AUCOIN ........................ Madeleine ARSENAULT
Isaac AUCOIN ............................ Cyprien ARSENAULT
Anne CORMIER .......................... Pélagie ARSENAULT
Jean-Charles AUCOIN................. Cyprien ARSENAULT
Rosalie BERNARD ....................... Marie BOURQUE
Nicolas CORMIER ....................... Jean-Baptiste ARSENAULT
Anne ARSENAULT ...................... Madeleine GALLANT
Paul AUCOIN ............................. Joseph ARSENAULT
Marie-Josephe LEBLANC ........... Marguerite BOUDROT
Joseph BERNARD ...................... Michel BOURQUE
Nathalie ARSENAULT ................ Marguerite-Joseph BOURGEOIS
François CORMIER .................... Abraham ARSENAULT
Anne CHIASSON ....................... Marie-Josephe SAVOIE
Joseph ARSENAULT ................... Jacques HACHÉ–GALLANT
Marguerite BOUDROT ............... Marie-Josephe BOUDROT
I always work dispensations out in the fashion above, to prove whether or not they are accurate or if the pastor made an error (which can and does often occur).Hope you and all can follow this methodology.
Dennis
