If everyone who was told they had First Nation blood actually did, there would be no one else in Canada.I too was told of an Indian Princess in the early years of one of the lines I'm following.It didn't matter that there was really no such thing as an "Indian Princess" in the MicMac Nation of Nova Scotia.However the Bernard name may have given rise to this belief in your case.You can access the 1901 and 1911 Canadian Census free at

If you look up the Bernard name in PEI in 1911 there are quite a few listed on the Lennox Island Reservation.
In Nova Scotia the 1911 Census has 88 people with that surname over half of which lived on reservations in Cape Breton. So the name has become connected with First Nations people at some point.
