Hi Don
I have always been told that the arscott name, was a very old Breton name which came across around the time of the Norman conquest the orignal spelling 'Harscoet' rough translation 'Shield of Stone'. Traveling throughout Brittany, and talking to various Breton historians this seems to be a good possiblity. As we all can trace the arscott name in its modern spelling to the 1300's it would make sense that it was from an earlier form of the name.
Well its a nice thought anyway even if it isnt true but i do believe it may be worth looking into properly at some point. Wish you luck in your search.
