Dear Arnold Family While following through on some research on Captain Donald Traill RN I became aware that his second wife Elizabeth Ruddoch or Riddoch as it was spelt in Scotland (nee Russell)was the mother of Elizabeth Cecilia Ruddoch who married the youngest son of General Benedict Arnold Elizabeth Russell married her first husband Captain Alexander Ruddoch RN on the 25 Dec 1793 at St Annes Soho Westminster UK. They only had two children Robert Stewart Ruddoch and Elizzabeth Cecilia Ruddoch
Elizabeth Traill died between November 1847 and the middle of January 1848 at 10 Addison Terrace, Kensington Middlesex. Although on the evidence of her will, she died a very rich women, she had had a long illness in which she was attended by a faithful maid called Janet Coot to whom she left an annuity of £30 a year to be paid in quarterly instalements. Her only son Robert Stewart Ruddoch was one of the trustees for her will The first legacy (£500) in the will was left to Mrs Letitia Barry (nee Fairbridge) Donald Trails niece, the daughter of his sister Elizabeth. Letitia had been born in 1795, and was the same age as Mrs Traills daughter Elizabeth Cecilia Ruddoch. To her grandchildren she was generous. First to the eldest son of her son named James Stewart Ruddoch born in 1830 she left £1000, to the eldest son of her daughter the Rev. Edward Arnold she left £1000, to her great grandson born in 1847 named Edward Bryant Burgess she left £100 should he reach the age of 21. She had 16 grandchildren , nine granddaughters and seven grandsons. She left to her nine granddaughters £400 each, plus the money from the sale of all her plate and jewels to be divided equally. with the residue of the estate devided between her children Robert Stewart Ruddoch and Elizabeth Cecilia Arnold. Elizabeth Cecilia was married in 1819 to Captain William Fitch Arnold the youngest son of General Benedict Arnold and his wife Margaret Shippen.
Captain Arnold died in 1846 and left six children: Edwin Gladwin, William Trail, Margaret Stewart, Elizabeth Sophia, Georgianna Phipps and Louisa Russell. William Trail died without issue; Margaret S. married Rev. Robert H. Rogers; Elizabeth S. married Rev. Bryant Burgess; Georgianna P. married Rev. John Stephenson; Louisa R. married Rev. G. Cecil Rogers, all clergymen of the Church of England. Edwin Gladwin Arnold perpetuated the name. He was a clergyman of the Church of England and rector of Barron in Cheshire. He was married in 1852 to Charlotte Georgiana, eldest daughter of Lord Henry Chalmondeley, son of the Marquis of Chalmondeley,Hoping this second link between the Traills and the Arnolds proves of interest. Another link was formed because Captain Alexander Ruddoch RN was a cousin of Captain Donald Traill and the grt grandson of Marjorie Traill born 1691 of Orkney who married Charles Stewart a solicitor of Edinburgh her brother John Traill died in Boston in 1740 He is buried at King's Chapel Hoping this is of interest Elsie Ritchie
