I have come across new evidence that indicates MUCH of what has been written about the identity of the Asa Arnold named in 1830 Haywood Co. TN is NOT the person suggested. I believe new evidence suggests the ASA ARNOLD listed as a young married man with one small son is the oldest son of either Elijah Arnold or his older brother, Levi Arnold, who are BOTH also listed on the 1830 Census for Haywood County Tennessee. The 1820 Census for both men in Franklin Co. TN show both had an older son who has NOT been officially identified. When WEST TENNESSEE first opened for expansion to settlers, Elijah Arnold and Levi's in-laws, the Kuykendall's (family of Matthew Kuykendall & Nancy Johnson) moved into the newly opened territory. It appears their trail west first took them through Hardeman Co. TN, where the Kuykendall's continued to live in 1830, as well as some of the family of Elijah Arnold's wife, the Shults. For whatever reason, however, Elijah and Levi continued slightly further west by 1830, probably settling in the lower part of Haywood Co. TN, which is DIFFICULT to determine since ALL early records in that county have been destroyed. (It is now known that one of the daughters of Elijah married a man from Fayette Co. TN, on the southern side of Haywood, and that other family relatives in the Shults and Hill families were also in Fayette at one time, suggesting a closer proximity to THAT part of the county???) Early marriages in Hardeman Co. TN show ASA ARNOLD m. RACHEL HILL around 1828, with the bond being furnished by JAMES HILL. It is documented that Rachel Hill was definitely the daughter of James & Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) Hill. The Hills became very closely aligned with the Arnold brothers, and in 1830, James Hill, is shown as the closest neighbor of Levi Arnold in Haywood County TN. The families did NOT remain in Haywood County very long, however. Levi REJOINED his Kuykendall in-laws and moved to DeSoto Co. MS before 1840. Elijah followed his Shults in-laws into Western ARK, area of Polk/Scott County. The HILLS, on the other hand, went to Texas, first in Panola Co., then Harrison Co. TX, on land near the Sabine River. Several of Levi Arnold's other sons, namely Hayden & Matthew Arnold, also went to Texas prior to the Texas Revolution and settled in the same vicinity as the Hill's. It is believed ASA ARNOLD and his Hill wife also went to Texas, but this time period in Texas records is poorly substantiated. Oral history in Elijah Arnold family states an older brother died as a young man during a "trip," possibly to California. The name of ASA comes forward in Elijah's family, usually attached as the middle name, along with Elijah as the first name. Elijah Arnold's oldest known daughter, Mary Arnold, married David Hill, a son of James Hill, and lived in the Republic of Texas from its earliest days. Their oldest son was named Elijah Asa Hill. Another son of Elijah's named his son ASA ARNOLD. There are a lot of blanks here, but what is known is this: Rachel Hill is found living adjacent her parents in 1850 Smith Co. TX with a SON in her home by the name of William C. ARNOLD, around age 21 years old. Her name at the time of the census, however, was Rachel SADLER, and she is shown as a single woman, but she also has some younger daughters last name of Sadler living with her. As stated, records in Texas are spotty pre statehood, but information suggests Rachel's first husband, last name of ARNOLD, had died leaving her with only one surviving child, a boy named William. Rachel then remarried Mr. Sadler and was living as head of her own household by 1850 with the young girls and her ARNOLD son. A recent trip to Harrison Co. TX did reveal that Rachel's second husband was JEREMIAH SADLER, and the records on file there prove the couple had separated, and that she was given what was due her from her ARNOLD's husband's land holdings. This shows he had at least MADE it to Texas to qualify for such. Rachel Hill Arnold Sadler never remarried. She eventually took her daughters and moved north of Smith Co. TX into Van Zandt County Texas, where she is found as a feme sole on later census records. DOCUMENTS in the Hill family, such as Bible records, etc. prove Rachel was DEFINITELY a child of the already mentioned JAMES HILL. Unfortunately, whatever happened to her son, William C. ARNOLD, is not known, other than he did at least reach adulthood!!! As stated, it is not known if this ASA was a son of Levi or Elijah. I personally lean toward his being Elijah's oldest son, but once again, NO PROOF. The name of Asa does not come forward in Levi's family, but it definitely does in Elijah's. Levi's family names are heavily influenced by the Kuykendall lineage. I descend from Elijah Arnold through HIS son, Levi V. Arnold, his grandson William Richard RICH Arnold. Rich Arnold's nearest brother was also named Asa Arnold. Several of Elijah Arnold's children came to Texas during the Republic of Texas, settling first in Harrison Co. TX, but Elijah himself did not move to Texas from AR until the early 1850's. The Arnolds ended up in Llano County on wataerfront property of the Colorado River. Brother Levi remained in DeSoto Co. MS the rest of his life. I know this is not 100% proof of the Asa Arnold in 1830 Haywood Co. TN, but the name, age, and family situation certainly shows this Asa had recently married by the number and age of the only child listed. The marriage record in Hardeman Co. TN ALSO defintely indicates Rachel Hill was closely connected to JAMES HILL, and later records in Texas definitely show Rachel's first husband had been an Arnold. Too bad the Texas record DOES NOT give the FIRST name of her Arnold husband!!! Hopefully, this inforamtion WILL be helpful to someone. Karylon A.
