Jane Arnold, Whitfield Co GA, b bet 1837-1842 SC

Searching for information on Jane Arnold. She was born between 1837 and 1842 in South Carolina. Her parents were born SC as well, per census records. Jane married John May in Whitfield Co GA 7 April 1859. Jane died between 1880 and 1891, as John remarried to Mary E. Whisenant, 18 Feb 1891 in Whitfield Co GA.

Now, here is the kicker....I suspect she was married previously. 1860 census shows them in Bradley Co TN:
1540-1640: John May, 21, farmer, blank (TN at head of page)
Jane, 23, blank (TN at head of page)
Thos M., 9, TN
Sarah A., 6, TN
Ge W, 1, TN

From the age of John the first two children arent his. Jane's age shows on various census to be sometime between 1837 and 1842, she is always shown to be older than John May by anywhere from 2 to 8 years. The 1860 census shows them closest in age. I suspect that Thos M and Sarah A are hers from a previous marriage, and John "adopted" them. They are not shown by any other surname other than May. Sarah is living with them in the 1870 census when they are in Red Clay, Whitfield Co, GA - Thomas is gone by then and I don't see him elsewhere.

I know Thomas and Sarah aren't siblings of John, as in the 1860 census his parents (David and Charity) are next door, and they also have a daughter named Sarah who was 16. They could have been nephew and niece though.

I do have the census records for John May for:
1850: Murray Co GA
1860: Bradley Co TN
1870: Red Clay, Whitfield Co GA
1880: Upper 10th, Whitfield Co GA
1900: Whitfield Co., GA
1910: Whitfield Co GA

And, I cannot find Jane in the 1850 census as a child. There is a Allen Arnold in the 1860 Whitfield Co GA census, aged 60, born in SC with children: Martin, Daniel, John, Martha E., Picknet and Chestnut Arnold with wife Nancy on the same page. In 1850 census in Murray Co GA there is Allen without a wife with childrenL: Jesse, Sarah E., Chesley, Martin, Daniel, John, Martha E., Pickney - no Jane.

Is Jane a Arnold by birth or by a first marriage?

Thanks, Trish Elliott-Kashima, Lawrenceburg, TN
