Hi Susan,
We exchanged some private email about this a few weeks ago. Your mail got me poking around again regarding the family of Daniel Bellows, and in poking around, I am running into you in all sorts of places on the web. You've been busy! I decided to post here thinking it would have better exposure than more private email.
My first information on the family of Daniel Bellows came from a typewritten report, author unknown, but possibly prepared by a genealogist for my grandfather (or perhaps my grandfather himself wrote it?). The report describes the line of my grandfather's mother, Caroline H. Bellows. The family of Daniel is shown as:
Daniel, born Hebron, NY 12 Feb 1781. Married ??. Had 5 children:
1. Emaline, born ??; married Jacob Shick
2. William Eaton, born 1804, married Harriet Bradley
3. Susan, born ??, married ?? Elison
4. Garritt, born ??
5. Harriet, born ??; married ?? Squires
No sources were given and I still don't know where much of that comes from.
Next, I began adjusting this family based on other records. Other family bible records for my family show that William Eaton (my ancestor) was born 20 Feb 1806. The order of children seems wrong, as the 1810 census shows Daniel with 2 boys under 10. A few years ago I guessed that the other boy may be "Philip Bellows", who appears in the 1840 census for Seneca County, age 30-40. That's the right age to be one of Daniel's sons in the 1810 census, and I was unable to attach Philip to any other Bellows family in the area. The 1810 census also shows Daniel's wife age 16-25, putting her born 1785 at the earliest. I believe that Willian Eaton was actually the first child, and so his mother was probably born 1790 at the latest.
The 1820 census shows Daniel with 1 boy under 10 (presumably Garritt; many other records show a Garritt born 1818 and I am guessing that is Daniel's son), 2 boys 10-16 (William and my guess of "Philip"), 2 girls under 10, who should be Susan and Emaline, and wife 26-45.
I've never been able to figure beyond doubt who Daniel's wife was, but a few years ago, while scouring every Seneca County Bellows census record I could find, I came across (at Ancestry.com) in the 1830 census a "Plley Bellows", clearly not the real name. The census taker had pretty ornate uppercase letters, and the name was hard to read. But after studying various other pages, and comparing all the uppercase letters, I concluded the name really began with "N" and was in fact "Nelley". To see what I mean, go to page five of the census records, where there appear names "Nelson", "Noah", and "Nathaniel". The names Noah and Nathaniel make it especially clear how the census taken formed uppercase "N". Anyway, the census record showed that this Nelley was "female" and 40-50 in 1830, making her born 1780-1790. I "guessed" that this might be Daniel's wife, because all the other Bellows from the area of an appropriate age were already "accounted for" (I made a huge study of all the NY Bellows). In the 1830 census, Nelley has 2 girls 10-16 (Susan and Emaline?), and one girl under 5. This would presumably be Harriet. William and Philip would be grown, but what about Garritt, who should be 12? There is no mention of boys; otherwise it would be a more perfect fit. If this is indeed Daniel's wife, it would indicate that something happened to Daniel before 1830 (and in fact the 1820 census is the last trace I can find of him).
Your email to me said that Harriet married a "George Squire". I found a George married to Harriet, and that census record indicated that Harriet was born 1828, which would match the previous guesses.
Then just tonight I saw that you also had discovered the "Plley" record, and had also concluded that the actual name was "Nelley". You also went on to say this was Daniel's wife (do you really know, or are you guessing too?).
Your info about Daniel's wife being a daughter of Eli Arnold seems reasonable. As you saw, Eli and Daniel appear on the same census page in 1810. In 1820 they are on adjacent lines! This would suggest they were at least neighbors, if not actually living in the same dwelling in 1820. You also said that Eli's daughter may have been "Eleanor". I searched various websites for nicknames, and all agreed that "Nelley" was often a nickname for "Eleanor".
In your correction record for "Plley Bellows", you say that Nelley was probably "Neeltje Arnold". I'm wondering where "Neeltje" came from (i.e. what happened to "Eleanor"? Did you find something new?) Also, I'm wondering if you have more info on Harriet and George Squire, and if it seems to agree with what I have said here. I'm also curious to know which Seneca County histories mentioned Daniel marrying one of Eli's daughters. It would be fun to know the actual reference...
Interestingly, the name "Arnold" is used as a middle name for various descendants of William Eaton Bellows. I always thought that it was due to another ancestor, Arnold Plate, but perhaps it is really from an "Eli Arnold" connection. "Arnold" is even used as a middle name for some female descendants, which makes more sense if you think of Arnold as a surname instead of a given name.
I have never been able to find any trace of daughters Emaline or Susan. Garritt I can trace; I have not really tried to trace Philip. And of course I can trace William Eaton to me.
Here's a question I have always had: Why is William Eaton the only one with a middle name? And why Eaton? It surely must be a surname. Are there Eaton ancestors on the Arnold side? (I know there are not any on the Bellows side).
I'm glad to see we both guessed-at/concluded many of the same things. That's reassuring because it means neither one of us can be entirely crazy!
Bruce
