Finding the grave marker of Johann Heinrich "Henry" Arney, Sr.
Johann Heinrich "Henry" Arney, Sr.
Born: 21 November 1755 (Yorktown, York County, Pennsylvania)
Died: 27 September 1830 (Jefferson Twp, Owen County, Indiana)
August 10, 1981
Mary Speac, who is now the only resident (of Arney, Indiana), on the east side of the road, is a descendant of Lawrence Arney. She told us that she had seen the grave of Henry Arney in the cemetery on the Don Collumbough farm. We finally found the cemetery on the Collumbough farm, sort of south and west of Arney on one of the typical winding, overgrown road s that must have been an Indian trail. Don Collumbough's son happened to be in the front yard. He informed us that Don is no longer living. He gave us permission to drive through the field across the road to reach the cemetery. It took a great deal of searching until we found Henry's gravestone. Without Mary's description of it, I'm not sure we'd ever have found it or known if we had, since only some of the marks were still legible. It was just a large rock with some other letters still readable that had been scratched in with a sharp instrument.
What we could make out was HE??? ARN?Y SEP 27 18??
It was the first burial ground set aside in Jefferson Township on land that had belonged to Henry Arney Sr.
