It's a new year, 2010, what do you know about Jacob Arney?
Hi everyone, it's a new year which means a chance to start off "fresh", and take a fresh look at our research on the mysterious Jacob Arney.
Can anyone tell me if you have found out any more information or documentation on this Jacob Arney?
His son, Christian Arney, Sr. was born in York County, Pennsylvania in 1750.
He moved his family from Pennsylvania (specific location not known) to North Carolina, in 1767.
His son, Peter Arney, was born in Tryon (now Lincoln) County, North Carolina, in 1772.
Jacob Arney died in Lincoln County, North Carolina, in 1784.
In 1787, Peter Arney (age 15) was labeled an "orphan" by the Court and was "bound over" to a John Fullenwider, to learn the trade of miller, until the age of 21.
Around 1793, Peter Arney moved to Wythe County, Virginia, and married Margaret (surname unknown) and began his family.
Around 1799, Peter Arney moved to what would become Tennessee.
In 1834, Christian Arney, Sr. also died in Lincoln County, North Carolina.
In August 1845, Peter Arney died in Overton County, Tennessee.
Now, what we would really like to know, is more about Jacob Arney.Who were his parents?Who were his siblings?Who were his children? Was Jacob born in the USA or abroad?
Information on some of his sons, Christian Arney, Sr., Johann Heinrich (Henry) Arney, and Peter Arney is quite vast (thank goodness).
I, myself, have yet to find DTP (Definitive Tangible Proof) of many things, for example:of Jacob's marriage(s), the births or baptisms of his children, tax lists on Jacob Arney, in PA, land purchases or sales of Jacob Arney, in PA, where was Jacob Arney living in Pennsylvania, in 1767, before he moved his family to North Carolina, what was the cause or reason, for Jacob Arney to move his family from PA to NC, etc.
I know most Arney researchers have either given up on trying to find out anymore information on Jacob Arney, or they have accepted that Jacob Arney was actually the son of a Frederick Ernigh, who arrived in the USA in 1732.
The Jacob Arney to Frederick Ernigh debate is a big "bone of contention".Frederick Ernigh did have a son, named Jacob, however this Jacob died in Pennsylvania, leaving behind a widow (Barbara). Therefore, a dead Jacob Arney (who died in Pennsylvania) could not have moved his family to North Carolina, and die a second time, in North Carolina.
I refuse to believe that we cannot find anymore information on Jacob Arney.
It is difficult to do research, when documentation that suggests otherwise is readily accepted.Individuals simply accept as fact, information that may not be actually true.
When you look up information on the Arney's, places like RootsWeb, Ancestry, and FamilySearch (i.e. LDS), Genealogy, etc. and individuals family trees (like WorldTree, etc.), all point to the same information, that Jacob Arney was the son of Frederick Ernigh.People accept the information as fact or as true, without verifying it with documentation or research of their own.
Even though, careful research of the Pennsylvania State Archives Series, reveals the documentation that this Jacob Arney is NOT the son of Frederick Ernigh, many people still accept it as the truth.
Believe me, it would be so much easier if I did. After all, I would have documentation of who Jacob Arney's father was, when he arrived in the USA, etc.If I only wished to trace my branch of the Arney's, to the time which they arrived in the USA, my work would be done, if I accepted the Jacob to Frederick Ernigh tie in, but I do NOT.
So, please anyone who may have new information, new clues, or more pieces of the Arney puzzle and the Jacob Arney mystery, please speak up.
I believe our best hope, is from descendants of Christian Arney, Sr.Both Jacob and Christian, would have probably been considered well off (wealthy), so their tombstones would have been more, than just a blank cross. It would be great to find one or more of their tombstones, in Lincoln County, NC.
Christian Arney, Sr. lived into his 80's and though his memory was faded, he still could reveal (for his American Revolution pension) that his parents were Jacob and Elizabeth Arney, and that Jacob was from Switzerland. So, you would think he would have documentation of his family, in one form or another, ex. a family Bible, etc.
Maybe someone reading this, will "come forward" with the clue(s) that have eluded us for so long.
