Doctor William Armes, Jr.
According to his own memoirs (found in the Leitchfield, Ky. Library) William Armes, Jr. was born on January 11, 1830.At a Senior Citizens Reunion held in Caneyville during the early 1900's he recorded his birth date as December 11, 1829.His tombstone is inscribed with the dates 1-22-1830 to 3-6-1907.He wrote that he had been born in Botetourt County, Virginia (North of Roanoke) and moved with his family to Vermillion County, Illinois in 1832 and in 1834, the family moved to Breckenridge County, Ky., where he grew to manhood and received the rudiments of an English education in the subscription schools of the county which he attended until age 19.He left home at that time and engaged in the carpenter's trade for eight years.During this time he studied medicine under Doctor William Hall in Breckenridge.In 1857 he moved to Grayson County and purchased a tract of land and began farming.In 1870, he engaged in the practice of medicine.In 1882, he moved to the Sand Springs Precinct and developed a large and lucrative medical practice in Grayson and surrounding counties.He continued farming in the area of Shrewsbury and was the owner of the only flouring mill in the district.His first wife was Cinderella Conklin (dau of David) born 1831 & died 1864.They married on 8-7-1852(other records give the date as 9-30-1852 and the Kentucky Family Records, Volume IV, indicates the date was 10-20-1852).This last record also recorded Cinderella's name as Sinderellas.William and Cinda had - William D., Lydia A. "Morrison", Sarah P. "Washburn" and James H.William married second - Mary E. Sands, on 8-17-1864 (dau of Samuel & Cinderella Sands.Mary born 6-14-1842.William & Mary are both buried in the Schrewsbury Cemetery.Their children were:George W., Samuel H., John A., Cinderella, Mary J., Robert E. and Pearlia.
