Hi, again Simon. Your Fotheringham Armit (1808-1873) was the sister of my husband Bob's GG Grandfather Robert, in the Orkney. The two of you have common ancestors beyond that. We went to the Orkney in June 1999, on an Orkney Homecoming, primarily for the descendents of the Hudson Bay Company. It was an emotional & fabulous experience!! There were over 200 of us, mostly from Canada. We were the only Armits. That is what gave us a kick in the butt to jump into genealogy in a big way. It's amazing what we have discovered over there & since then!! Now WE'd like to do it again & have a bunch of Armits go with us!! We visited the church where Rev John Watson armit's name is on a plaque with all the other Ministers. There are as many names before him as after him. The old man who lives in the building that was the manse where he once lived, said that he had deen told that the building is over 700 yrs old.
