Between 1864 and 1867 Robert was on the HMS Salamander taking part in an oceanographic survey of the Queensland, Australia coast. Armit Island in the Whitsunday Passage is named after him. After that he was on HMS Vindictive. I have no record of the ship you mentioned.
He was suspected of writing a book, Wanderings in the Interior of New Guinea, under the name of Captain J.A. Lawson. A copy of the book is held by the Royal Commonwealth Society and contains a "manuscript identification" of Robert. It appears that this book is now a collector's item and is of some value. He also wrote two other books entitled Law of Storms and Wind in His Circuits.
He died some time after 1891.
If you have any more information about him I would certainly be interested as I am about to publish a book on the Armit family.
