Jim, Frank H. Whiting at age 41 married Florence Armfield, age 25, on June 1, 1920. Florence(b.1895)was the oldest of three daughers(sisters were Julia b.1896 and Frances b. 1901) born to James B. Armfield (1867-1916) and Emma Anderson Armfield (1873-1953). Emma's father was Dr. John Anderson. James B.'s parents were Robert Franklin Armfield (1829-1898) and Mary Annie Denny(1834-1896) who married in 1857. Robert Franklin was a distinguished citizen. He was a lawyer, Col. in the Confederate Army, N.Carolina state legislator, U.S. Congressman, and a Superior Court Judge. Two of his sons were also lawyers including James B. Armfield.

There is no "State Street" in our town --perhaps someone understood State Street rather than Statesville. The home of James B. Armfield was on Davie Ave but about 20 years ago it was moved to a side street to make way for a new structure. The Robert Franklin house still stands a few block away on East Broad St. in Statesville.

Robert Franklin and wife are buried in Statesville's Oakwood Cemetery in an Armfield family plot. James B. and wife are buried in the same cemetery in the Anderson family plot.

Robert Franklin was the son of Robert, who was the son of William Jr.(Little Billy), who was the son of William, who was the son of John Armfield to came to America from the north of England.
