I was in the Library of Congress yesterday and met a historian in the Near East Section who was Armenian. I asked him to pronounce Keghi and he did so exactly as you just described. In looking at a French book on Armenia (at the library), there was a list of cities in the vilayet of Erzerum. They listed Keri, but not Keghi. I am pretty well convinced that the French often spelled Keghi as Keri.
I am compiling a spreadsheet of all Keghi/Keri immigrants shown on the Ellis Island passenger lists. So far, I have found 318 of them. Can you tell me about your grandfather (name, age, year of immigration, etc.) so that I can see if I can find him on the lists?
