Richard,

I would suggest looking at Castle Garden (www.castlegarden.org) as that would encompass immigrants prior to 1892 that came through the Port of NY.

Other ports were Baltimore, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Galveston. If you get a free 2-week subscription to Ancestry.com you can search many of these different ports' passenger lists. Ellis Island and Castle Garden are free on their websites and also indexed on Ancestry.

The massacres began in Harput in 1895 before culminating in 1915 so I don't know what records are left/available. Do you have any idea what town or village your grandparents were from? I realized in my research that when immigrants listed "Harput" as their city of residence it often actually meant the district of Harput, as my family came from two small villages several miles outside of the main city...Kesrik (Kesserig) and Hoge (Hoghu).

I have a list of towns in Harput (can't find the website right now), but I've copied the information below from my files. It's not much but it gives you at least an idea of what towns/villages were in the region and how many Armenians lived in each. I believe this was from 1912?

It's translated from French so it's a bit choppy.
